The Land

The Land

Sam van der Hoeven

Fields of green grass spreading mile after mile
Growing together beneath heaven's smile.
Watered with raindrops, warmed by the sun
Made up of many, you seldom see one.

Deer in the distance, a herd on a hill,
Grazing together wherever they will.
Fawns in fast circles leap with delight,
Safety in numbers—and mother's sharp sight.

Mountains reach upward, piercing the cold,
Watching together, patient and old.
Monuments made to each enemy met,
Time etched in stone, to never forget.

Birds in the sky flying far overhead
Singing together without fear or dread.
Sweetly their song echoes loudly and strong,
Better for every bird singing along.

Eye to my nose, therefore blind to the land,
Sitting alone with a Bible in hand.
